ここ数年、自動車開発で耳にするようになった品質の指標として「感性品質」があります。
特にデザイン分野では顧客満足度に直結するものとして近年その重要性が高まりつつあり、perceived quality（知覚品質）とも呼ばれています。

当たり前品質の上位概念

品質と聞くと、まず浮かぶのは部品同士の隙間や段差の組み付け精度、いわゆる「当たり前品質」とも云われるものかと思いますが、ここで述べる感性品質はそのもうひとつ上の概念、
「デザイン表現を最大限に感じさせるための出来栄え」
と捉えられているものです。（注：メーカーにより官能評価の意味合いとする定義もありますがここではデザイン表現とします）
その製品デザインが目的とする狙い、例えばソフト感やシャープさを表現する為にふさわしい構造や素材、あるべき仕上げ、そしてそれらがどの程度のレベルで成り立っているかを指標として定め、各メーカーが開発上で商品性評価の項目として導入しています。

唐突ですがひとつの例を挙げてみます。この写真のインテリアデザインからどのような印象を感じ取れるでしょうか。

◇落ち着いていてシック。
◇シンプルで質実剛健っぽいが高級感がある。
◇ディスプレイ周辺が際立っている
……いかがでしょう、そんな雰囲気のキーワードが浮かびませんか？

答え合わせをすると、この内装デザインのテーマは「モダン・ラグジュアリー」とのこと（※公式HPから引用）。現代的な豪華さ・贅沢さと解釈できるでしょうか。

具現化手法の完成度＝感じさせる品質

実際、この車は多くのメーカーから感性品質が高い仕上げとして目標にされていますが、それはこのデザインを構成する要素の強調やバランスの良さが、伝えたい狙いを精度高く感じさせているからと考えます。

このデザインの評価を読み取ると下図のような要素が挙げられます。

これらを開発者として観るべき面とすれば、この表現の具現化のために施された細部のさまざまな造形や表面処理の方法です。
例えばエアコンの吹き出し口に注目すると、円形のアウトラインを強調するためにピアノブラックの加飾部を盛り上げ、サテンシルバー部分のC面でシャープな陰影を表現。さまざまな光と影を存在させることで密度感を与え、それが結果的にワイドディスプレイ周辺を見せ場として華やさを与えます。

当然ながら基本品質の高さは大前提ですが、その上に成り立つデザイン手法とその完成度が「感じさせる品質」のレベルを成すのです。
なおこの例は高級車だから良い結果なのではなく、たとえ軽自動車であっても内装全体のテーマに高い調和性と当たり前品質が伴えば、見る人に好ましい印象を与え、作り手の思いが織り込まれたデザインの狙いもしっかり伝わると考えます。

感じさせる品質の存在意義

デザイン作業に多くの時間と工数を掛け、フィジビリティ(実現性検討)を重ね具現化した製品に込めた”狙い”が見る人に純度高く伝わるということは最良の”費用対効果”になるのです。またさらに大切なのはそこにコスト意識や効率性が含まれているかであり、採算度外視での手法はあまり評価されません。知的創意こそがプロダクトデザイナーの腕の見せ所でもある訳です。

実際この車もドアは部品数が少なく作られており、コンソールも表面材は一体です。インパネ（ディスプレイ）に重きを置いたコンセプトだからこそのバランスといえます。

建付けがいまいちな製品が見受けられたのも過去の事。今やメーカー各車の基本品質は「当たり前」となり、その上位概念としてデザイン表現で欠かすことができない感性品質の存在とその意義について、皆さんにも興味を感じていただけるように今後も様々な事例を用いながらできる限りわかりやすくお伝えできればと思っています。

Quality that makes you feel

One measure of quality that we have been hearing more and more about in automotive development over the past few years is “sensory quality.
Especially in the design field, the importance of perceived quality has been growing in recent years as it is directly related to customer satisfaction.

Superordinate concept of “Naturally basic quality”

When we hear the word “quality,” the first thing that comes to mind is the so-called “Naturally basic quality,” such as the precision of assembly of gaps and bumps between parts, but the sensory quality described here is a concept one step above that, and is considered to be “the quality of workmanship that maximizes the impression of design expression.

The aim of the product design, for example, the structure, materials, and finish that should be provided to express softness and sharpness, as well as the level of completion of these elements, are defined as indicators, and each manufacturer introduces them as items for evaluation of product quality during development.

Let me give you an example. What impression do you get from the interior design in this picture?

・It is calm and chic.
・It is simple and looks solid, but has a sense of luxury.
・The area around the display stands out.
…..How about it? Do any of these keywords come to mind?

Answer.
The manufacturer has announced that the theme of this interior design is “modern luxury” (*quoted from the official website).
This can be interpreted as modern luxury and extravagance.

Perfection of the method to realize the design = perceived quality

In reality, this car is targeted by many manufacturers as a finish with high sensory quality, and this is because the emphasis and balance of the elements that make up this design give a sense of precision to the aims it conveys.

As a developer, what you need to look at are the various details and surface treatment methods used to realize this expression.
For example, focusing on the air conditioner vent, a piano black decorative part is raised to emphasize the circular outline, and sharp shadows are expressed by the C surface of the satin silver part, giving a sense of density through the presence of various lights and shadows, this gives the area around the wide display a showy appearance.

Naturally, high basic quality is a prerequisite, but the level of “perceived quality” is determined by the design method and its degree of perfection, which is built on top of the basic quality.
For example, even if it is a K-car*, if it has a high level of harmony with the overall interior theme and “natural quality,” it will create a favorable impression on customers, and the design aims that are woven into the creator’s thoughts will also be conveyed clearly.

*K-car: Japan's own automobile standard, which offers reduced taxes and other benefits for vehicles within this standard. 
Three- and four-wheeled vehicles with an engine displacement of 660cc or less, a length of 3,400mm or less, a width of 1,480mm or less, and a height of 2,000mm or less.

Significance of “perceived quality”

The best “cost-effectiveness” is when the “aim” of the product, which is the result of many hours of design work and feasibility studies, is conveyed to the viewer with a high degree of purity. 
What is even more important is whether cost consciousness and efficiency are included. Because, unprofitable methods are not valued. Intellectual creativity is where the product designer shows his or her skills.

In fact, the car in this photo also has door trims made with a small number of parts, and the center console is also made with a single surface material. This balance can be attributed to the concept of placing emphasis on the instrument panel (display).

It is a thing of the past that we have seen products that are not well constructed.
Basic quality is now “the norm” for all manufacturers.
In addition, as a higher-level concept, I intend to continue to explain the existence and significance of “perceived quality” which is indispensable in design expression, as clearly as possible, using various examples, so that everyone will find it of interest.
